Homework Guidance

As a parent or carer, you can play a vital role in your child’s education, including homework. You can help by encouraging, discussing ideas and by ensuring your child has a good working space at home.

~ Homework Expectations in Year 3 ~

Weekly homework consists of completing the following for Year 3:

  • One Literacy/Grammar task provided weekly
  • One Numeracy task provided weekly
  • Spelling practice at home made up of weekly spellings, which follow a taught strategy shared throughout the week.  We will hand new spellings out on a Friday to be tested on the following Monday.
  • Reading with an adult on a daily basis - please record this in your child's reading record where and when you possibly can
  • Times tables practice at home as frequently as possible - TTRS can be used to support this
  • A project style task to be set at the start of each half-term relating to the class's topic. This is a creative piece and can be interpreted however the child wishes. We encourage children to complete this as independently as possible. Each project will be due in in the final week of half-term but is not compulsory.

It is extremely helpful when comments are made in reading records and homework books regarding homework based on your child's achievements or difficulties. As always, if there are any problems with any homework tasks, please do not hesitate to ask for help and support.

A note from Miss Alton and Mrs Anderson on homework.

All homework will be based around work we are doing in class. This should mean that children feel comfortable and confident to tackle each task. However, if there are occasions where children are not sure, please do encourage them to seek support from ourselves, any other adult within the classroom or voluntarily partake in homework club, which will take place on a Tuesday lunchtime with a supportive member of staff.

Please do not struggle or stress at home, we are here to help.

Homework will be handed out on a Friday and due back in on a Wednesday.

As your child's completed mental maths and spelling tests will be in their homework books, it is expected for homework books to be in school bags everyday to ensure the children have their spellings and log ins to hand.

Weekly homework may be either in the form of an online activity or paper-based. The children will be informed of these prior to it being handed out on a Friday. Any information we feel will further support parents will be added to the class web page.

Reading books should be handed in every Monday. The children will receive a new book every week. Please encourage your child to read the chosen weekly text as often as they can to build their fluency and prosody - children will be discouraged from changing books any earlier.

Throughout the week you may wish to: read the text; re-read favourite parts; discuss punctuation and how this affects the way we read aloud (prosody); develop expressions when reading (prosody) and become familiar and confident with new vocabulary.

Other weekly tasks include practising times tables using TTRS.

Times Tables

Practising times tables is extremely important as the times table facts should be known by the end of Year4.

They need to be able to 'Rapidly recall' within around 5 seconds - they should not have to count through the tables facts to get there! They need to be able to say the answer to a multiplication or division question (up to 12x12), for example, 7×8=56 and therefore also 56÷7=8 and 56÷8=7.

Table practice takes place daily, where possible, in school. Daily practise at home for a short while is more effective than last-minute ‘cramming’.

Please see additional support on the 'Times Tables at Home' page.

Topic Homework

There will be a topic activity set which children have the whole half term to complete - this is not compulsory but will further support your child in developing their imagination and creative ideas and help them to be able to create links between their learning.

The children are encouraged to make this task their own as it will be open-ended relating to the topic of study.

This homework will be shared safely across our school social media site and children will have the opportunity to discuss their work with their peers.

It will be due in on the final Monday of the half term.

Any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask and member of staff for further support.
